The no-membership route, in the apps’ own words

These apps sell advances through a paid plan, but their own terms or help pages say you can get one without it. The app won’t usually offer this on screen. Instant fees still apply if you want the money fast.

What “free” leaves out

  • Tips. EarnIn, MoneyLion, B9 invite an optional tip. A tip of $5 on $100 for 14 days costs the same as a 130% APR fee. You can always choose $0.
  • The wait. Standard transfers take from within a day to five business days, in the apps’ own words. If a bill is due tomorrow, the free route may be too slow.
  • The account. Some free options only deliver to the app’s own account (Chime, Albert, MoneyLion Spend), which may mean moving your pay there.
  • The next advance. A free advance is still taken back on payday. If that leaves you short again, the next one starts the cycle. See alternatives.
